MINNEAPOLIS – This one was a long time coming.

Thanks to another huge day by the offense, the Milwaukee Brewers outlasted the Minnesota Twins, 9-8, to cap the teams’ interleague series at Target Field on Sunday afternoon, June 22.

It was the first sweep of any kind by the Brewers of the Twins since July 2-4, 2018 in Milwaukee and the first sweep of at least three games in Minnesota since Milwaukee took a four-game set at the Metrodome from May 17-20, 1996.

Rhys Hoskins and Brice Turang both homered and every starter had at least one hit for the Brewers, who totaled 35 runs and 47 hits for the weekend.

Things got too close for comfort late, as the Twins nearly erased a six-run Brewers lead entering the seventh inning before closer Trevor Megill entered in the eighth and recorded a four-out save.

Milwaukee has now won four straight and is a season-high eight games over .500 at 43-35.

A nail-biter ninth

The Brewers got a runner to second base in the ninth but he was stranded, setting the stage for Megill to close out his former team.

He began by inducing a foul pop, then Harrison Bader doubled. Byron Buxton, who’d already homered twice, was put on base intentionally.

Matt Wallner then popped out and struck Trevor Larnach out on three pitches to save his 17th game in 19 opportunities.

This one has gotten unnecessarily close

With one out in the eighth, Jared Koenig got a sharp grounder off the bat of Wallner hit right at Hoskins at first base.

Hoskins should have just taken the play himself but hesitated, that allowed Wallner to beat Koenig to the bag for a hit.

After Larnach flew out, Ty France hit a two-run homer in a 1-2 count to left to pull Minnesota to within 9-8.

Singles by Brooks Lee and Carlos Correa followed, chasing Koenig. Megill entered and caught Jonah Bride looking at a called third.

Byron Buxton goes deep again

After the Brewers failed to score for the first time on the day in the top of the sixth Buxton belted his second homer of the day, a two-out solo blast off Abner Uribe that made it 9-4.

Another scoreless frame in the seventh set the stage for a nerve-wracking bottom half as DL Hall retired only one of the five batters he faced, leaving the mess to Nick Mears.

Minnesota ended up scoring a pair, but Mears got the potential tying run in Harrison Bader to fly out to right.

Brice Turang belts one out

A tough defensive day for the third baseman Lee got tougher when he booted what should have been a ground-ball double play off the bat of Rhys Hoskins.

That left runners at second and third with one out for Turang, who then launched a three-run homer to right to up the Brewers’ lead to 8-3.

Three straight singles followed, with Sal Frelick’s line drive to center upping the advantage to 9-3.

Milwaukee scores in each of the first four innings

Caleb Durbin and Joey Ortiz both singled to start the fourth.

Durbin was on third when Frelick sent a fly ball to right field that was plenty deep for Durbin to tag on and score, but for some reason he stayed put.

Jackson Chourio struck out, but Durbin was able to scamper home on a wild pitch with Christian Yelich at the plate. Good thing for the rookie, too, as Yelich eventually struck out.

The Twins got the run back quickly in the bottom of the fourth when Ryan Jeffers homered to left in an 0-2 count. Priester allowed a single two batters later and was pulled having allowed a season-high nine hits.

Brewers battle back

Lee bobbled Frelick’s chopper to start the third, then Chourio reached on a swinging bunt.

That brought up Yelich, who sent a high chopper over Lee’s head at third that scored Frelick. Two batters later, Isaac Collins walked to load the bases and Hoskins drove Chourio in with a sacrifice fly to left to put Milwaukee ahead, 4-2.

Back to even

Hoskins greeted Festa by pulling a leadoff homer down the left-field line to tie the game at 2-2 in the second.

The homer was the first of the series for the Brewers, who’d amazingly scored their first 27 runs in the two games without one.

An eventful first inning

For the third time in as many games in the series, the Brewers grabbed the initial lead.

And once again, it was Yelich in the mix – capping a nine-pitch battle with Coulombe by ripping a two-out double to right.

William Contreras followed with a single to center, making it 1-0.

The advantage didn’t last long, however, as Buxton battled back from an 0-2 count against Priester to rip a leadoff homer to left.

Minnesota then singled four consecutive times with one out, taking the lead for the first time in the series at 2-1.
