The Boston Red Sox are in a bit of a weird spot right now. They have the talent to win now, but injuries and the drama with Rafael Devers have gotten in the way. With Devers shipped away in a trade, the Red Sox could have an odd trade deadline approach.
We could see Boston buy after it just traded away its best player. But it wouldn’t be smart for the Red Sox to acquire an expiring talent because this doesn’t seem to be their year. Instead, the Red Sox could and should target trade chips with team control beyond this season.
FanSided’s Cody Williams recently listed Freddy Peralta, the Milwaukee Brewers ace, as one of the top trade targets for the Red Sox this season, and the idea makes a lot of sense.

“If you’re wondering why the Brewers, a team still in the NL wild card and NL Central races would be selling at the trade deadline, the simple answer is that they’ve done it before,” Williams wrote. “Milwaukee has mastered the art of creating a sustainable future without overspending and selling now on Freddy Peralta with ostensibly 1.5 years of control left would be a way to go about that. If that’s the case, the Red Sox should jump at the opportunity to acquire the right-hander.
“Peralta has long been a high-quality arm in the rotation but has leveled up further this season with some of the best numbers of his career. Furthermore, his baseline — he’s not posted an ERA higher than 3.86 since the 2020 season — would give Boston that much-needed reliability behind Crochet at the top of the rotation for this year and next in a cost-effective manner in terms of salary and the 2026 club option.”
Peralta is one of the better pitchers in the National League this season, and he’s putting together one of the better campaigns of his career.
He has an $8 million club option for next season, which the team that has him rostered will almost certainly pick up.
For the Red Sox, this idea makes perfect sense. It would give them another ace besides Garrett Crochet. Peralta would help the team this season, but if the Red Sox fall short of the postseason, the righty would be back to help the team again next season.
