Dominik Szoboszlai has been one of Liverpool’s best players this season and his national team coach has hinted that he could have his sights set on joining Real Madrid someday

The head coach of the Hungarian national team has claimed that Dominik Szoboszlai has always ‘dreamed’ of playing for Real Madrid amid fresh transfer speculation over the Liverpool midfielder.

Szoboszlai, 25, has become one of the Reds most influential players since joining them from RB Leipzig back in the summer of 2023 and was a key cog in the swashbuckling Liverpool team that won the Premier League title under Arne Slot in his maiden campaign last season.

The midfielder, who has filled in superbly at right-back this term, has previously been touted as a future target for Real Madrid.

And now Szoboszlai’s national team boss, Marco Rossi, has seemingly revealed that his star man has grown up always wanting to represent Los Blancos at some point during his career.

Rossi is quoted by Marca as saying: “Because of the very close and direct relationship I have with Dominik Szoboszlai since he started playing football as a child, Real Madrid has always been his dream.

“I don’t know if he’ll be able to take that step, because the decision depends on him and also on his club.”

While Rossi was quick to express Szoboszlai’s admiration for Real Madrid, he went on to hint that the player could yet choose to extend his contract with Liverpool, adding: “I absolutely don’t rule out the possibility of him staying at Liverpool and renewing his contract there, especially because he’s highly valued within the club.”

Szoboszlai is under contract at Anfield until 2028, meaning the Premier League champions are in a strong bargaining position if Real Madrid were to make a move for him.

Despite being played out of position at times this term, Szoboszlai has arguably been Liverpool’s best and most consistent player and has nine goals and seven assists to his name. No wonder, then, that his manager waxed lyrical about him prior to this weekend’s FA Cup tie against Brighton.

“Szoboszlai, I cannot stop talking about his qualities, close to ridiculous,” Slot said.

“On and off the ball, work rate another level, the intensity, he presses, unbelievable technique, game insight, offensive midfielder, right-back, right-winger, all these qualities in these positions, he has been vital for us this and last season. He will continue to be that for us.”
