Two Broncos stars are reportedly playing for their futures at Red Hill, with the club’s salary cap squeeze set to force one of Gehamat Shibasaki or Jesse Arthars out.

According to Code Sports, both players are on the chopping block with Brisbane having eight players currently in their squad without a deal for the 2027 season.

Cory Paix and Antonio Verhoeven were also recently handed fresh contracts, while negotiations have begun to retain rising playmaker Tom Duffy.

Billy Walters could also extend his time at the Broncos — leaving minimal salary cap space to retain both Shibasaki and Arthars.

Shibasaki enjoyed a monumental rise in 2025, going from a train-and-trial deal to the Origin arena, before falling down the backline pecking order under Michael Maguire this season.

The 28-year-old is reportedly earning only $160,000 this season, but has four clubs interested in his services with an asking price of above $500,000, given his rep honours.

“To be honest, I’m not sure,” Shibasaki’s agent Wayde Rushton said when quizzed on whether his client will remain at the Broncos.

“I know the Broncos would like to keep everyone they’ve got there, I just don’t know how that will work with the blokes they’ve still got off-contract.

“We’ve got other clubs that are interested.”

He will start in the centres against the Tigers, while Arthars will also wear the No.1 jersey in the absence of Reece Walsh.

Arthars has reportedly held talks with the Titans regarding a move, and Maguire made it clear both players were in his plans for the future.

“I don’t want to lose ‘Gem’ or Jesse,” Maguire said.

“Jesse has been outstanding. Everyone wants to be out on the field but what Jesse does for the team, he is part of a leadership group and he drives values.”
