The World Sikh Organization of Canada said a “violent incident” at the Nanaksar Gurdwara temple in northeast Edmonton Friday morning left two people injured.
In a statement issued shortly after 10:30 a.m. MT Friday, the organization said early Friday morning, an intruder entered the Gurdwara and attacked individuals inside.
Two people were injuries, the organization said. There are also reports that Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Sikh scripture, was attacked during the incident, according to the statement.
Police are currently on scene and the Gurdwara has been closed to the public while the investigation continues, the statement reads.
In an advisory issued shortly before 11 a.m., Edmonton police said officers are investigating a stabbing inside the temple.
Northeast Branch Patrol officers responded to a reported stabbing at the Nanaksar Sikh Temple in the area of 14 Street and Horsehill Rd. at 5:08 a.m., it said.
Upon arrival, an adult male suspect was located and arrested. EMS responded and treated two adult males on scene for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Police continue to investigate.
Officials are expected to hold a news conference later Friday.
