Celebrity chef Martha Stewart’s famous potato salad recipe has left some critics online skeptical as she revealed that it only involves six simple ingredients.

On April 6, a clip of the 84-year-old whipping up the dish was shared on her offical Instagram account, leaving fans divided in the comments. The recipe is plain and simple: it consists of potatoes, one medium white onion, one half-cup of white vinegar, and one cup of Hellmann’s mayonnaise.

And while some found the recipe to sound like the perfect spring-time side, others thought it sounded too bland to actually be appetizing. This comes as Martha recently confessed that she has never used the online ordering app Uber Eats, despite being a spokesperson for the company.

Along with the clip, Martha’s account captioned, “Martha’s favorite potato salad is a much-loved Kostyra family recipe that Martha grew up eating and learned to make from her Aunt Catherine.”

The message continued, “It calls for red-skinned potatoes, like Red Bliss, which are used because of their sweet, creamy flavor. While they’re still warm, the potatoes are peeled, sliced, and tossed with white vinegar, which gives this delicious side dish a tang.”

According to Martha’s recipe, the potato salad strays from traditional potato salad recipes in how the dressing is incorporated. Rather than stirring the dressing into the potatoes, the dressing dressing is added to the potatoes, then the potatoes and dressing are poured into another bowl, and the process is repeated.

This method ensures all the potatoes are coated in dressing and pieces aren’t broken by stirring. After chilling in the refrigerator, the potatoes absorb some of the creamy dressing, and the salad is ready to be plated up. Martha typically garnishes the dish with thinly sliced hard-boiled eggs, just like her aunt used to do.

After the recipe did rounds on social media, many took to the comment section sharing their mixed reactions. One critic commented, “Oh my that sounds just awful!”

Another added, “I don’t think that looks good at all I think it looks like a mushy mess.”

While a third chimed in, “Yuck. I don’t know what that is but it’s NOT potato salad.”

Another critic questioned, “How about eggs, celery?!?” To which someone else echoed, “Ummm missing some ingredients yah??”

But on the flip side, others shared their love for the recipe.

One supporter wrote, “All the negative comments are wild! I had no idea this recipe had such history, my nonna always made potato salad this way with the addition of fresh parsley, I make one the same way. It’s so delicious.”

Another fan added, “This recipe sounds absolutely delightful-can’t wait to give it a try!”

And a third person wrote, “I’ve made this! It truly is a polish deli-style recipe and for what it aimed for was a 10/10. Creamy, cool, un-precious. Grating the white onion allows it to incorporate so smoothly and quietly. The vinegar brings it all together. This is one of many great types of potato salad.”

While someone else supportively chimed in, “I always found the clip fun to watch. I live for Big Martha doing her competent thing. I bet I’d like it. Seems like the flavor profile would be very potato-forward.”
