NBC has pushed back the Hurricane Ian episode of its new documentary TV series “Survival Mode,” according to a show spokeswoman. The episode had been scheduled to broadcast at 10 p.m. Monday, July 7, on NBC stations nationwide and also stream on Peacock.

The decision to hold the episode came after deadly flooding in Texas over the weekend. The spokeswoman confirmed that was the reason for the delay.

The Hurricane Ian episode will now air July 21, according to the spokeswoman. The July 7 premiere will instead be an episode about the 2011 tornado disaster in Joplin, Missouri.

Delayed Hurricane Ian episode follows Texas flooding, deaths

More than 80 people across six Texas counties — including at least 28 children — have died as a result of flash flooding after the Guadalupe River near San Antonio overflowed, according to USA Today.

Texas’s Kerr County was inundated by as much as 15 inches of rain triggered by intense thunderstorms, the National Weather Service reported. That’s half of the total the region sees in a year.

The Guadalupe River rose more than 26 feet in just 45 minutes, according to Weather.com.

The Hurricane Ian episode of “Survival Mode” — which includes flooding and loss of life on Fort Myers Beach during the September 2022 hurricane — will air at a later date, the NBC spokeswoman said. The episode’s run date will be announced later.

More about Hurricane Ian episode of ‘Survival Mode’

In the episode — originally set to be the premiere for the new series — Hurricane Ian survivors from Fort Myers Beach tell their stories of surviving the storm.

The stories follow three groups of Hurricane Ian survivors: The Fancher Family, a group of boaters anchored offshore, and a group of close neighbors that included husband and wife Mitch Pacyna and Mary Wojciechowski. Pacyna — often referred to as the unofficial “Mayor of Fort Myers Beach” — died during Ian after being swept away by storm surge.

In all, the episode interviews about 10 Hurricane Ian survivors, as well as Gulf Coast News meteorologist Allyson Rae and first responder T.J. Temples, according to information provided by a show publicist.

The new weekly TV series — produced by NBC News Studios — chronicles recent disasters through firsthand accounts from survivors and rare archival footage, according to an NBC publicist. Future episodes will feature the Maui wildfires, the Amtrak 501 derailment, Superstorm Sandy and the sinking of the Costa Concordia.
