London: The country breathes a sigh of relief as Burruchaga drags a backhand wide to hand de Minaur a tight first set, 7-6 (7-5).
After watching his fiancee, Katie Boulter, lose right before him on court three, de Minaur’s Argentinian opponent played a great opening set, including being 3-0 up.
I felt like Demon didn’t offer enough variety early in the match, but he worked his way back into it with some more slices and off-pace balls.
Even then, Burruchaga’s level never seriously dipped, and there was genuine concern that Demon might go a set down when he lost the mini-break in the tiebreaker.
But Burruchaga made consecutive errors, including a double fault, to give up his advantage. We’ll see if Demon can make an early statement in the second set.
