A new Avengers: Doomsday rumor sheds some light on what Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom will be up to in the MCU movie.
Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday is currently in production. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, also known as the Russo Brothers, the film will be released in 2026. The sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, follows in 2027.
What do we know about Doctor Doom’s role in Avengers: Doomsday?
Scooper Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus has revealed some new details about Robert Downey Jr.’s role as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
“[Doom] sees the incursions that are happening as a danger to the Multiverse, and he wants to put a stop to it using a young Franklin Richards,” Perez said when asked what Doom’s motivations may be in Doomsday. “He sees himself as the hero in this story and will do whatever it takes to make sure he stays on top.”
Perez also said, “The only thing I can say for sure is that the main character, or ‘hero’ for Avengers: Doomsday, will be Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, in the same way Josh Brolin’s Thanos was the main character of Avengers: Infinity War.”
Additionally, Perez mentioned that Downey Jr.’s character will lead “Team Doom (although he doesn’t really need anyone).” Whether that means he’ll actually be working with other supervillains or if his “team” will be composed of variants and/or Doombots remains unclear at this time.
This is all just a rumor and should be taken with a grain of salt at this time, as official plot details for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars remain highly under wraps over at Marvel.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives on December 18, 2026, as part of Phase 6 of the MCU. Avengers: Secret Wars then follows on December 17, 2026.
