Here’s the latest developments1m agoTue 7 Apr 2026 at 1:15pm Iran ‘walking on thin ice’ but negotiations ongoing, say Pakistani sourcesAs US strikes on Iran intensify tonight, efforts to facilitate talks between the US and Iran are still ongoing, two Pakistani sources with knowledge of the discussions have insisted. Pakistan has been at the centre of negotiations between the US and Iran in recent weeks, acting as the main go-between for proposals shared by both sides, but there has been no sign of a compromise. One of the sources, a senior security official, told Reuters that Iran’s strike on Saudi Arabia’s industrial facilities linked to US firms threatened to derail the talks. If Saudi Arabia were to respond to the strikes, the talks would be over, the source said, adding that retaliation could also draw Pakistan into the conflict under its defence pact with Riyadh. The second source said Iran was “walking on thin ice” and that the next three to four hours were critical for the future of dialogue. “We are in touch with Iranians. They have lately shown flexibility that they could join thetalks, but they are at the same time taking hard lines as a prerequisite for any negotiations,” the Pakistani security source said. US Vice President JD Vance says the United States has largely accomplished its military objectives in Iran.

Speaking during a visit to Hungary’s Budapest, he said the US has ‘tools in our toolkit that we so far haven’t decided to use’ on Iran.

He also said the US feels confident that it can still get a response by 8pm tonight, local time.

“We were going to strike some military targets on Kharg Island, and I believe we have done so,” Vance said.

“We’re not going to strike energy and infrastructure targets until the Iranians either make a proposal that we can get behind or don’t make a proposal,” he added. “I don’t think the news in Kharg Island … represents a change in strategy, or represents any change from the President of the United States.”

Earlier, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said attacks targeting civilian and energy infrastructure “are barred by the rules of war, international law” and would surely trigger reprisals from Iran.

He spoke ahead of the deadline for possible strikes against Iran set by Donald Trump.

“We’re already seeing a surge of fuel prices. If energy facilities in Iran were struck, we can expect reprisals from the Iranian regime that would further worsen an already worrying situation,” the minister said.

It comes as both Pakistan and Egypt also urge de-escalation.
