US Vice President JD Vance says the United States has largely accomplished its military objectives in Iran.
Speaking during a visit to Hungary’s Budapest, he said the US has ‘tools in our toolkit that we so far haven’t decided to use’ on Iran.
He also said the US feels confident that it can still get a response by 8pm tonight, local time.
“We were going to strike some military targets on Kharg Island, and I believe we have done so,” Vance said.
“We’re not going to strike energy and infrastructure targets until the Iranians either make a proposal that we can get behind or don’t make a proposal,” he added. “I don’t think the news in Kharg Island … represents a change in strategy, or represents any change from the President of the United States.”

France, Pakistan and Egypt urge de-escalation
Earlier, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said attacks targeting civilian and energy infrastructure “are barred by the rules of war, international law” and would surely trigger reprisals from Iran.
He spoke ahead of the deadline for possible strikes against Iran set by Donald Trump.
“We’re already seeing a surge of fuel prices. If energy facilities in Iran were struck, we can expect reprisals from the Iranian regime that would further worsen an already worrying situation,” the minister said.
It comes as both Pakistan and Egypt also urge de-escalation.

Foreign ministers for both nations spoke earlier.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the leaders “underscored the need for de-escalation and dialogue” and agreed to remain closely engaged as the situation evolves.
Pakistan has been engaged as the key mediator between the US and Iran.

Governor Hassan Hosseini said all train movements were cancelled until further notice “in order to exercise caution”.
We reported earlier that Israel’s military warned Iranian train users to stop travelling.
“For the sake of your security, we kindly request that from this moment until 21:00 Iran time [3:30am Wednesday AEST], you refrain from using and traveling by train throughout Iran,” the statement from Israel’s military said.
The Islamic Republic News Agency later reported two people had been killed after strikes on a railway bridge in Kashan in the country’s west.
