Superman could have been a very different movie if the title character was played by Nicholas Hoult. Hoult, who portrays Lex Luthor in the film, auditioned for the role of the Man of Steel — and now James Gunn is opening up about why the X-Men star didn’t get it.
Gunn, the man tasked with bringing Superman back to the big screen, talked to Jake’s Takes (via Variety) about how he gave one of the most coveted roles in Hollywood to newcomer David Corenswet. He also revealed what swayed him between the two stars.
“Most people [auditioning for Superman] weren’t doing anything wrong, they just didn’t fit how I envisioned this Superman to be,” Gunn said. “Nicholas Hoult auditioned. He’s a great actor. Some might say he’s better than David in certain ways, but he just didn’t fit the role. That’s why he didn’t get that.
