Supercars champions Mark Winterbottom and James Courtney have come together in the most ridiculous crash of the Bathurst 1000 weekend, and the culprits didn’t even have a superlicence.

Barely minutes into Practice 6, a flock of ducks decided Conrod Straight was the perfect spot for a Saturday stroll.

Courtney’s Team 18 Camaro ploughed straight up the back of Winterbottom’s as the yellow flags waved in a bid to save the ducks from becoming road kill.

The session was red-flagged. The ducks, presumably, waddled off untroubled.

The cars? Not so lucky.

Both limped back to pit lane needing repairs.

“How funny, the two commentary blokes crashing into each other,” Winterbottom said.

“Obviously double waved yellow, I backed off there and he’s hit me full noise.

“It’s done a fair bit of damage. You’re not sure if a kangaroo is going to jump out, there’s limited comms …

“He hit me hard so we’ve both got damage.”

Courtney was warned about the ducks over the radio – but not in time.

“It was strange,” Courtney said.

“We just started going so I got up it, Mark and I are going, and then all of a sudden he jumped on the brake halfway down the straight.

“It was either the wall or the back of him. It’s something I wasn’t anticipating to happen, so pretty surprising.”
