Wales looks to finally be set for a downpour in the coming days after weeks of heatwave conditions and dry weather. This month is expected to be the driest July in Wales on record with very little rain having fallen so far.
There are some isolated showers forecast to bring an end to the month but it’s the start of August when a true change is expected. According to the Met Office forecast for Wales this weekend, downpours are expected across much of the country.
It comes after fire chiefs have warned about the risk of wildfires across the country due to how dry the earth is. A serious wildfire in Blaenavon has been burning for over 10 days, with smoke being visible for miles. It is one of a number of wildfires that has left Welsh hillsides scorched. Last week, two parts of Wales became the first areas in the UK to officially declare drought status this summer following successive scorching heatwaves and record-low river flows. Natural Resources Wales (NRW) confirmed on Thursday that they had triggered the declaration of drought status in both North Wales and the Upper Severn.
According to the Met Office forecast, the end of this week will see Wales’ first downpours in over a month. It will remain largely dry over the coming days, with just a few isolated showers, before a band of rain moves in on Sunday afternoon.

Wednesday, July 29
Wednesday looks like it will be Wales’ wettest day of the month so far. Heavy rain is not forecast, but there will be some scattered showers throughout the day.
The showers will continue into the afternoon.
The rain showers could be heavy in isolated areas.
The wet weather will gradually ease throughout the day.
The most rain is forecast to hit the north of the country.
Thursday, July 30
Thursday will start off with some showers before turning dry for the rest of the day. The Met Office forecast states: “Thursday will start rather cloudy with the odd spot of rain. Skies will brighten from the northwest leaving a mostly fine afternoon. Feeling much fresher in gentle northwesterly winds. Maximum temperature 22C.”
Friday, July 31
Friday will be another largely dry day, with just a few small and isolated showers forecast.
Saturday, August 1
The first day of August will be yet another dry one, before downpours move in on Sunday.
Sunday, August 2
Sunday will remain dry until a band of heavy and persistent rain moves in from the south-west at around 4pm. By 10pm, most of the country will be experiencing rain which will continue overnight.
There are no detailed Met Office weather map forecasts beyond this point.
