Pittsburgh Steelers at New York Jets preview
The NFL schedulers have come up with a great opening fixture for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Jets as both will be facing their former quarterbacks at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
Aaron Rodgers was jettisoned by the Jets after two injury-hit and unproductive seasons in the Big Apple and the 41-year-old former Super Bowl winner is now hoping for a successful final flourish with the Steelers. The Jets have turned to Justin Fields, a former first-round draft pick of the Chicago Bears, who went 4-2 in six starts with the Steelers last season.
The Steelers have never had a losing record under long-serving head coach Mike Tomlin, but they have lost in the Wild Card round of the playoffs in four of the last five seasons and it’s hard to see them faring any better with an ageing Rodgers at the helm. The Jets are worth supporting as home underdogs.
The Jets went 5-12 last season and have not registered more than seven wins in a season for a decade. But they have a chance to improve with the more mobile Fields leading their offence and he has some solid support from running back Breece Hall and wide receiver Garrett Wilson. Young cornerback Sauce Gardner can help to keep the Pittsburgh passing attack quiet, although that unit is boosted by the arrival of DK Metcalf from the Seahawks.
Both sides are strong defensively and the handicap start could make the difference in what looks likely to be a low-scoring contest as both teams get used to their new QBs.
