Reese Witherspoon believes in financial independence, a principle that was shaped by her own family’s experiences. In an exclusive sneak peek at Tuesday’s episode of Aspire with Emma Grede, the Hello Sunshine founder shared how witnessing other women not be taken care of financially fueled her passion to help them. Witherspoon made the remarks while discussing the best piece of money advice she’s been given: “Don’t get into debt.”
“Do everything you can to not get into debt and pay off those credit cards, or don’t spend the money like it’s yours. It’s not yours, girlfriend,” the Academy Award-winning actress said. “And that was a really good piece of advice.”
The actress also advised to never “let somebody control you with money.” Witherspoon said, “Somebody says, ‘I’ll take care of it and I’ll take care of you and I’ll take care of this.’ That person could leave. That person can hurt you. You always keep your job. Your job is your life insurance. My mom used to always say that to me.”

“And my mom went through some tough stuff in a marriage with finances. Really tough stuff,” she added. “And so did my grandma. Not in the marriage, but in like a family structure. And I have this past of women not being taken care of financially.”

Podcast Host Emma Grede, who could relate to her guest, noted that it “scars you.”
“It’s in me so, so deeply,” Witherspoon confessed. “And that’s why I have a passion for helping women understand and also demystifying it.”
While on the podcast, the actress also spoke about investing in herself. Witherspoon, who founded Hello Sunshine in 2016, recalled telling her friends that there was not enough content being made for them.
“And I complained about it,” the Big Little Lies star said. “And then I had this kind of aha moment where I was like, ‘Okay, I can either admire the problem, I’m giving it a lot of attention, or I can come up with a solution to fix it.’ And that was everything for me.”
Witherspoon continued, “So for the next six months, all I did [was put] pen to paper, said: ‘What can I do about it?’ And also, I’m the one complaining about this problem. If I think I’m going to fix it, I’m going to put my money where my mouth is and I’m going to invest in myself because I’’’m my own best lottery ticket. I know I will pay off.”
