Wilyer Abreu, Drake Baldwin named Players of the Week

Coming out of the All-Star break, it only took Wilyer Abreu and Drake Baldwin one impressive weekend to prove themselves worthy of the AL and NL Player of the Week Awards.

Abreu, who benefited from playing one more game than most of the rest of the league, took full advantage of the extra at-bats to go 5-for-14 with four homers and six RBIs in helping the Red Sox to sweep the first-place Rays at Fenway Park and extend their winning streak to 13 games — their longest in nearly 80 years.

All four of Abreu’s homers came in a two-game span, including two on Saturday to help fuel Boston’s comeback win.

A two-time Gold Glove Award winner, the 27-year-old right fielder is having his best season offensively, slashing .264/.337/.458 with 15 homers and 49 RBIs to go along with a 3.9 WAR that is already a career-best.

Baldwin, who started behind the plate for the National League during the All-Star Game on Tuesday, came back from Philadelphia as hot as ever, going a ridiculous 10-for-14 (.714) with five runs scored, eight knocked in and three homers, including two on Sunday, helping his Braves take two of three at home against the Rangers.

The reigning NL Rookie of the Year is batting .276/.362/.481 on the season with 18 homers, 54 RBIs and a 132 OPS+.

As is the case with Abreu, this is Baldwin’s first Player of the Week Award.

The latest Play of the Week comes from an unlikely source — Orioles pitcher Brandon Young, who made a kick save Sunday vs. the Astros on a liner up the middle by Jose Altuve before snagging the ball out of the air and throwing it on to first in plenty of time for a the out. He went on to allow just one run with seven Ks in seven innings to improve to 8-2 on the season.
