Princess Anne steps in and forces William to face Prince Harry

For years, Prince William has had one very effective way of dealing with his brother: keeping his distance. But with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly preparing to bring their family back to Britain, that strategy could be about to become impossible.

After four years without speaking, the once-inseparable brothers are suddenly facing the prospect of being back in the same country – and potentially having to come face-to-face, whether they like it or not.

The bombshell news that the Sussexes are reportedly planning to return to the UK with Archie, eight, and Lilibet, six, will have sent shockwaves through the Royal Family, particularly given the apparent depth of the rift between the brothers. And with Harry now believed to be edging closer to his father, King Charles, after their Highgrove reunion last month, William is said to be feeling increasingly angry and betrayed.

He reportedly only found out about Harry’s latest return shortly before it happened, while the brothers themselves remain firmly estranged.

Yet the timing makes the situation even more painful. Next year marks the 30th anniversary of their mother, Princess Diana’s, tragic death, while their father continues to receive treatment for cancer. For a family already facing huge personal challenges, the continuing feud between her two sons is an especially heartbreaking one.

Now, we’re told one senior royal has decided enough is enough. Princess Anne, famed for her no-nonsense attitude and legendary straight-talking, is said to be urging her nephews to grow up, put the past behind them and finally make peace. And if anyone is capable of telling William and Harry a few home truths, it’s surely their famously formidable aunt.

‘Anne says everybody in this situation shares some of the blame, not just the Sussexes and not just the Waleses, and in her view they all need to be brought into line and told that this nonsense has gone on far too long,’ the insider says.

‘The reputational fallout the entire family is suffering because of this immaturity is simply unacceptable, especially when the King is still ill, and he’s repeatedly asked both of his sons to find a way through this.

‘In her view, for two grown men to be fighting, sulking and getting bent out of shape over every little thing when they should be treasuring every moment they have left with their father, and showing him proper respect is appalling.’

In June, the family joined together to celebrate the wedding of Anne’s son, Peter Phillips, to NHS nurse Harriet Sperling. Harry and Meghan Markle were not on the invite list, which undoubtedly gave Anne some precious time to catch up with William at the wedding reception, which was held at her home of Gatcombe Park.

And the source says Anne has been encouraging William to try and place his own feelings to one side and consider the repercussions of his row with Harry on his father, and how Charles’ reign will one day be remembered.

‘She’s been chipping away at William and trying to get him to see how bad this is for his father’s legacy,’ they tell us.

‘It’s fair to say things did go quite cold between her and Harry after his book came out, but she’s come around to the King’s way of thinking, and she’s ready to move forward and feels strongly it’s time William did too.

‘By all accounts, Harry has been a lot more open to fixing things, so in some ways she’s actually happier with his attitude at this point, though she’s in no way letting him off the hook.’

Anne, 76 – the only daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip – has always had to carve her own way within the family, which, at the time of her birth in 1950, prioritised younger sons over older siblings; meaning that by the time Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Prince Edward were born, she had already been pushed way down the line of succession.

Still, Anne has maintained her lifelong passion for competitive horse riding and breeding and has become known as being one of the most pragmatic and hard-working senior royals, also remaining loyally by her mother’s side until her death in 2022.

Anne has also spoken candidly about her mother’s decision to keep the boys at Balmoral Castle following their mother’s passing in 1997.

Opening up to ITV, she said, ‘I just don’t know how you could think that that would have been a better thing to do…I don’t think either of those two could, would have been able to cope they’d been anywhere else.

‘That was the only good thing that happened was that they were there, and they had that structure, they had people around them who could understand, give them the time, little time that they had, which was never going to be very much, to try and come – even in a fleeting sense – to terms with what had happened.’

Appearing on her son-in-law Mike Tindall’s podcast in 2023 alongside William, Anne also reminisced on how she would chase William and Harry along castle corridors, with William quipping, ‘You were quite quick. The look that you had on your face was quite terrifying.’

Even now, the source says both Harry, 41, and William, 44, see Anne as someone they can confide in. So much so that when Harry wrote his scathing 2023 memoir, his aunt was one of the only senior royals who was spared from his explosive bombshells.

We’re told, ‘Anne has always been very close to both boys; she’s someone they’ve gone to for advice over the years, especially during times when they’ve not been getting along with their father, and that is still the case to this day.

‘It’s telling that Harry didn’t have a bad word to say about Anne in his memoir and, in fact, went out of his way to let the world know that she was the one person from his family who greeted him when he flew to see his grandmother when she was dying.

‘Anne may not always have the warmest demeanour in public, but she has always been very loving with Harry and William as well; she cares deeply about them, and she genuinely hates to see them both suffering like this.’

What appears to be Anne’s recent U-turn, we’re told, stems from her attendance at the funeral of Dame Shân Legge-Bourke, alongside Prince William, in March.

Anne’s long-time lady-in-waiting was also the mother of William and Harry’s beloved nanny, Tiggy, who cared for them both before and following their mother’s death and whom Harry called their ‘favourite nanny’.

The source says, ‘They just attended the funeral a few months ago for her former lady-in-waiting, and Anne was very sad that Harry wasn’t there because she knows he would have liked to pay his respects since she was the mother of his and William’s dear nanny Tiggy.

‘The funeral was a big reminder for Anne of how quickly life goes by, and she didn’t miss the chance to hammer that home with William. He’s the one who is being the most hard-headed here, so he’s the one she’s really got to work on, but she and Harry are speaking as well.’

Anne has also remained incredibly loyal to her own siblings, appearing to share a close bond with them all. When Charles received his cancer diagnosis in 2024, Anne stepped up her duties. And, despite the furore surrounding Andrew and having strongly aligned herself with Charles, there have also been reports that Anne and Edward have questioned the monarch’s treatment of Andrew.

And we’re told she firmly believes that if William and Harry fail to reconcile, it would truly be a ‘tragedy’ for them both – especially as they will now essentially be living on each other’s doorsteps.

The insider says, ‘She absolutely believes they are missing each other and worse off because of this feud. She relies so much on her siblings to get through the hard things in life; it’s a tragedy in her view that the boys are forsaking that privilege, and she’s not going to sit back and let this go on.’
