Jeffrey Viel lifts Connor McDavid off his skates in Game 3

Connor McDavid went airborne Thursday night in Anaheim, and the clip has been making the rounds ever since.

Jeffrey Viel, the Ducks’ 29-year-old bottom-six forward on a $775,000 cap hit, caught Edmonton’s captain with a finishing check near the boards that lifted him clean off his skates.

McDavid came down without incident. No penalty was called on the play. No injury. But the optics were striking enough to set social media on fire within minutes.

The hit landed right on the numbers. Some Oilers fans felt Viel saw the name and the number on the back and chose his spot. Others called it a standard check, nothing more.

That’s the eternal playoff debate, isn’t it? One fan’s good hit is another fan’s cheap shot, and the truth usually lives somewhere in the middle.

What’s clear is that Viel received no penalty and the Department of Player Safety did not intervene. A clean check in a rough, physical series. Anaheim is not playing this one softly.

McDavid held scoreless in two games as series shifts to Honda Center

The physical moment matters less than what’s on the scoreboard, and right now the scoreboard tells a complicated story for Edmonton.

McDavid has no goals and no assists through two playoff games. A -2 rating. He put up 138 points in the regular season with 13 power-play goals, and right now the Ducks have shut him out entirely.

Kasperi Kapanen leads the Oilers with 3 points in 2 games. Vasily Podkolzin has 3 assists. Leon Draisaitl has been carrying the load with 4 points.

The problem isn’t a single hit by Viel. It’s a consistent pattern of McDavid being kept off the board by a team built for exactly this kind of grind-it-out series.

Anaheim won Game 2 by a 6-4 final. This series is now tied 1-1 heading into tonight’s Game 3 at Honda Center, where the Ducks went 24-13-4 this season.

Joel Quenneville’s team is confident at home, and they’ve shown they can trade goals with Edmonton. Their power play converted at 50% in Game 3 through two periods, going 1-for-2.

Evan Bouchard is a -3 through two games, a real concern for Kris Knoblauch. His 95-point regular season means nothing if the blue line keeps going minus in the playoffs.

Viel will keep doing what Viel does. The question is what McDavid does next.
