I’m getting my step count up today folks and have rushed over to the SEC Armadillo to watch our Aussie in the weightlifting. Kiana Rose Elliott is competing in the women’s 63 kg class.

Now don’t worry if you’re not a weightlifting expert, I’ll give you a quick rundown below.

Today athletes will have three chances to complete two disciplines – the snatch and the clean and jerk. The snatch sees the lifter pick up the barbell with a wide grip and raise it overhead in one fluid motion. In the clean and jerk, the lifter first brings the bar to their chest (that’s what they call clean), pauses, then drives it overhead (this is the jerk) with locked elbows. They must hold it steady until the buzzer sounds

Elliott has successfully lifted 99kg for her snatch and is now attempting her clean and jerk.

The Australian has a first attempt at 112kg. She takes a deep breath and bends down. Wincing she struggles briefly before an audience member shouts out “Push Kiana Push”

She does it! Elliott is now second on leaderboard with two more attempts.
