Toby Jones has shared some disappointing news about his BBC comedy TV series, Detectorists.

The sitcom, written by and starring Mackenzie Crook alongside Mr Bates vs The Post Office actor Toby, first aired in 2014 and ran for three seasons.

Set in the fictional town of Danebury in Essex, it followed the lives, loves and metal-detecting quests of Danebury Metal Detecting Club members Andy and Lance.

The middle-aged men took time away from their regular day jobs to focus on their hobby, scouring for Roman trophies in the fields of their hometown.

The programme gained a huge cult following, and was thrust into the spotlight again when episodes landed on Netflix.

Yet despite perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes scores across all three seasons, there’s no plans for Detectorists to return.

In a new interview, Toby addressed the show’s possible future, telling Deadline: “Once you’ve maybe found the Holy Grail there’s very little place to go.”

Referring to the ending of the 2022 Christmas special, he went on: “The idea of coming back after that would be very hard and also… it’s very British and not very American – but there is a certain virtue to leaving people wanting more.”

His comments echo Mackenzie’s in 2024, when he told The Guardian: “I won’t be making any more Detectorists, but nobody should be sad. We made just the right amount.”

He then hinted: “Having said that, I know Toby is keen to do a live stadium tour…”

The news comes despite roaring fan reviews, with one person writing: “Brilliant, by every measure. TV gold.”

Another said begged: “Wish there was a season 4 too!! Awesome series!!” while someone else said: “A beautifully pleasant tv series……I loved it.”

A fourth called it “outstanding,” with another saying: “I would give this 10 stars!! The best TV show I have seen for sure. The script, the cast and the music. Everything. I absolutely love it! It gets more entertaining the more you watch it…I love every season. MacKenzie Crook can do wrong.”

“This show is an absolute gem, I have watched all series 3 times and expect I will watch it again. It is perfectly cast, the humour is perfectly placed and the story is marvellous. Mackenzie Crook has hit a home run with this, the ending is brilliant but I would love if they do another series or even a special episode in the future,” one fan echoed.

Detectorists is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
