A Meals on Wheels service in Derbyshire has closed suddenly, sparking concern from the area’s MP.
The service, which operated across Amber Valley, announced its closure via social media and their website, citing safeguarding issues as a reason.
Their statement read: “Unfortunately as of January 10, Meals on Wheels has to close with immediate effect, due to safeguarding issues.
“Standing orders will need to be cancelled from your side.
“No more payments will be taken as of January 10, 2026.”
Meals on Wheels is a service which delivers food to elderly and vulnerable people, as well as social contact for those unable to leave their homes.
Linsey Fansworth MP has now attempted to trace the owner, saying she knew many people were concerned about the announcement.
She added: “My main concern is for the customers, many of whom will be vulnerable.
“I would like to make contact the owner with a view of making sure all of the customers have been informed and that I can support any who haven’t been and help them to make alternative arrangements where needed.
“Thank you to everyone who has reached out to customers and looked after them and also shared the news on social media. It’s another example of how brilliant our community is when we come together.”
She told Derbyshire Live that her main priority was ensuring everyone affected by the closure, especially vulnerable residents, had the support they need.
“Local community leaders and businesses have already stepped forward with generous offers to help provide meals, showing the best of our community in action,” she added.
“I’d encourage everyone to check in on elderly relatives, friends, and neighbours, and my office is ready to help anyone who needs assistance finding alternative arrangements.”
